Don't Make Everything Bigger

I have clients all the time asking me to make this bigger and that bigger, so it will grab people's attention. Pretty soon they have ten huge buttons or links at the top of the page yelling and screaming at you.

The client will say that they think it is too hard to find the checkout button, so make it bigger and sales will go up. Yet, I make it bigger and sales remain the same. People will easily find the checkout button if they really want to buy the product.
Try advertising a Brand New Samsung Blu-Ray Player for only $15 on your web site in the smallest font size and then hide it at the bottom of the page with a tiny picture of it. My guess is that people will both find it and figure out how to order it no matter how hard you hide it.
